4th Newsletter DATES

The main objective of DATES is to explore approaches and options for the deployment of a secure and trusted tourism data space, ensuring transparent control of data access, use and re-use
  • The project is in its final stretch and so far numerous studies and activities have been carried out, all of them related to tourism and data, data sharing, data governance and above all, the effects for the whole ecosystem involved.
  • Below are the main activities that have been carried out with great success and whose results contribute to the successful development of the project.

EU Stretegy for data: lessons from data ecosystem and data spaces
On the 31st of May, Intellera Consulting published the article “EU Strategy for data: lessons from data ecosystems and data spaces'' on Euractive, based on its hands-on experience with relevant projects linked to the EU Data Strategy. Through its work on the media and tourism data space, Intellera uncovered relevant insights on the state of the art of data sharing in these sectors – including shortcomings and ways forward.
The shortcomings include a lack of data sharing culture in both sectors, and a lack of cooperation and coordination mechanisms of data exchange in the tourism field, leading to issues such as lack of data accessibility and interoperability. Moreover, workers in both sectors often lack data analytics and data management skills, which prevent a meaningful exploitation of the value of data. Suggestions for improvement include recommendations to use a practical approach based on use cases for incentivising data sharing; to invest in digital and data analytics skills in both sectors, and to adopt innovative approaches to data sharing – such as sandboxing – to test possible solutions and foresee bottlenecks.

MYT SUMMIT

Palma de Mallorca held the main touristic congress at the Balearic Islands, the IV edition of the MyT Summit, this year the chosen topics were: Talent and Data. This Congress aims to position itself as an event of reference at national and international level and is intended as a forum for debate and exchange where professionals from different sectors, directly or indirectly related to tourism, bring their experiences and contributions, from the balance in the participation of women and men, helping to generate references, as well as contribute to achieving a more competitive and sustainable tourism sector.

.Data spaces are a new initiative to accelerate the competitiveness and sustainability of the tourism industry through data sharing. Spain is leading the European Tourism Data Space through the DATES project, coordinated by Anysolution. This Congress will present the progress made in this project, as well as various initiatives which are being developed in the field of the data economy.

DATES-Consortium meeting

Following the MyT Summit, all DATES partners attended the project meeting in Mallorca. The meeting was a great occasion to share vision about the project and about data spaces in general. It also served as an opportunity to reinforce the team bonds among partners, always collaborating from different EU countries.
The meeting focused on the progress of the work. Discussion regarding the Work Package (WP) of “Context analysis and agreed components” focused on the few left activities to close the WP by the end of June. The discussion regarding WP about “Governance and Business Framework” and “Technical Framework and Design” focused on presenting the works carried out so far, also with practical simulations. Moreover, they presented the activities and the methodology foreseen for the next steps.
An important part of the meeting focused on the final Blueprint. There was consensus that this document needs to function as a guide for data space deployment, therefore focusing mainly on the technical and governance components. The consortium agreed on a preliminary table of content for the blueprint, which will need to be developed in collaboration with the DSFT (Data Space for Tourism) project in November.

THE EUROPEAN TOURISM DATA SPACE: POSITIONING THE EUROPEAN TOURISM INDUSTRY
Data spaces are the new initiative that promotes reliable data sharing while ensuring that the data owner remains in control of them. Data spaces will promote a more competitive economy by generating efficiencies, reducing costs, improving products and services, as well as developing new business models. For the tourism industry, this will be a direct benefit, allowing them to better understand the profile of tourists and thus to personalise their experience and make it more enjoyable.
For those reasons the event held on June the 8th organised by AnySolution under the title 'The European Tourism Data Space: positioning the European tourism industry' has been the perfect occasion to present the Dates project in a more in-depth way.
The main objective of the DATES project is to explore approaches and options for the deployment of a secure and reliable tourism data space, ensuring transparent control of access, use and re-use of data. The project will therefore focus on the development of governance and business models.
In broader terms, the outcome of the activity will support the digital transformation of the sector, fostering competitiveness, resilience and sustainability as key success factors for maintaining Europe's leadership

DATES RUNS THE FIRST VALIDATION WORKSHOP
30th of May was an important milestone for the DATES project. Even though the project had already run a series of data collection workshops with different stakeholders, this was the first one focused on validation of the project’s results achieved so far.
That may seem a minor thing. You have done your work, you present it and then you tick the box that says “done”. Not as easy as it seems. Investment in research & innovation projects may fall short of realising the real impact of the developments in real life. This might be partially due to three reasons: i) sometimes there is no check of the feasibility of real deployments, ii) not enough investigation of whether the project fits the needs of at least an incipient market composed by frontrunner customers; and iii) a lack of exchanges and interaction with those organisations that may follow-up, invest, use or promote the results. Engaging users in development stages where they can shape the potential outcomes is thus key to foster adoption and acceptance.

That is why DATES has defined a program that uses engagement and participation of stakeholders as a pillar for the definition of contents, including requirements, business needs or use cases, leading to a better understanding of the market needs. DATES, being a flagship project in the domain of data spaces (in this particular case with the focus on designing the European Data Space for Tourism), presents additional specificities that emphasise the need for such interaction and engagement with the community of practice. Firstly, DATES is designing a product or a solution (we could even say a philosophy or a new way of doing things) that is “looking for a market”, since data spaces still require a good understanding of the motivation and incentives for organisations to share data. Secondly, DATES, as all the other actions designing data spaces, will be followed-up by a deployment phase that will require companies to make investments. If the project is to set up a base of convinced investors, providers, and users, then, adhering to the design principles of the data space becomes crucial.
Following this approach, DATES organised a validation workshop focused specifically on validating some elements worked out as part of the Context analysis and agreed components as well as the basis of the initial Governance and Business Framework. The session allowed the project to collect additional data and missing items from our study.
JEWISH HISTORY TOURS
In this Newsletter we'd like to tell you about another European CEF Telecom project, Jewish History Tours. The project explored how cultural heritage content - historical photographs and documents, stories about people and places - can be used to develop engaging experiences for both individuals and groups of tourists interested in the culture and history of destinations they are visiting. This is sometimes referred to as "cultural tourism".

Cultural tourisms is another important use-case that the Tourism data space will need to address in the future: thanks to the data space, the secure exchange of data will be facilitated between the sources of cultural heritage data (museums, archives and communities) the professionals who can use it to build engaging experiences (guides, curators, storytellers)and platforms and apps that will deliver engaging experiences to the end user.
